Discantus have produced their own twelfth-century ‘Paradise Garden’, inspired by Hildegard and Herrad. It illuminates the work of these two formidable abbesses, allowing us to hear, besides their modest count of only four items each, many other gems from Pairis, St Gall, Klosterneuburg, Cologne, Engelberg – a whole repertoire of Hymns, Responsories, Propers, troped Ordinaries, troped Benedicamus, a polyphonic lesson, canon and conductus. They themselves walked freely in that full-flowering Hortus Deliciarum: in the case of Hildegard, to hear and perform this music would have helped to mould her own innate, spontaneous gift of melody. A striking example is the double Alleluia towards the end of the recital. At first we hear the Alleluia – In Maria benignitas from the Cistercian Abbey of Pairis, near Colmar. To this is juxtaposed Hildegard’s own brilliant Alleluia – O virga mediatrix. Marie-Noel Colette remarks that these could almost be two verses from the same composition. To my mind that suggests that Hildegard could absorb existing material, making it her own, allowing it to take wing and soar to the heights, return and soar again.
What fun to have included that vocal exercise, Diapente et diatesseron! Composers as well as singers would have benefited from the training; what’s more, it gives us a chance to imagine these nuns hard at work, rehearsing with their monochord.
