I am not quite sure what ''Humoresque'' actually means; but although it certainly serves for identification, it only doubtfully describes the disc as a whole. For this consists almost entirely of slower, gentler tunes (played most beautifully), with only the most occasional hint of something livelier (played anything up to devastatingly). Thus it is the excellent quality of the playing, backed by the excellent quality of the arranging, which must win any willing listener's ear; not, probably, the programme as such.
Yet many of the pieces, taken in isolation, are undoubted winners: the Benjamin Jamaican Rumba is, the Rachmaninov Vocalise is, the Satie Gymnopedie is. But above all the very first excerpt, the altogether stunning Flight of the bumble-bee is. If you are a violinist who thinks he knows something about bow-control you had better steer clear of this one, lest disillusion and despair set in.
The booklet's notes illuminated one small corner of history for me, and well may for many other listeners. I have always thought Stephen Foster's Jeanie with the light brown hair was among the most entirely charming of popular tunes (not matched, perhaps, until Cole Porter's Have you met Miss Jones?). But I did not, alas, know that the Jeanie referred to by Foster was his wife Jane McDowell, who, unhappily, later twice (the second time finally) left him. Life does not always go right, we all know: but it seems such a pity that the marvellous tune had such an unhappy outcome!'
