Sarajevo-born Ivana Gavrić says that she hopes that this CD “will serve as a journey through pieces that are suffused with passion and lyricism that show all the facets of my musical personality”. The dominating facet illustrated by her calling-card would seem to be one of soulful, not to say sombre, introspection. For, with the exception of the last movement of the Schubert and the E minor Moment musical, there is little variation in the emotional range of this programme.

The four short movements of Janácek’s sour, sober Impressionism preface Schubert’s A minor Sonata (1823), the one with the funereal first movement and its touching Andante. By then we have had more than 30 minutes at the same chilly temperature. Some sunshine filters through in Liszt’s three Petrarch sonnets before two of Rachmaninov’s most deeply felt and lyrical Preludes, and the “plangent, full-bodied funeral march” (booklet) that is the B minor Moment musical.

Gavrić’s playing throughout is notable for its beautiful sound, musical integrity and introspection, able to convey the impression of someone who, transcending the studio conditions, can take herself off to another place in order to get to the heart of the music. I just wish we had been allowed to see more facets of this fine pianist.
