Author:
Bolet's splendidly sonorous account of the Rhapsody makes it sound as it must have done when it was new—challenging, even daring. And his great sensitivity to the nuances of piano tone comes over a fraction better on CD than on LP. A truthful presentation is achieved, also of those troublesome very low tremolos near the start of ''Funerailles'', although the main point here is Bolet's uplifting performance of the central slow section. His mastery of legato is marvellously apparent in the Liebestraum, and this piece affords some relief from the heavy-weight virtuoso outings. This reading of Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is the finest now locally available, its drama contrasting well with the crystalline purity bolet brings to ''La campanella''. A variant of the latter is the graceful control with which he shapes the Rigoletto Paraphrase. It is to be hoped that all the other recitals in this outstanding series will appear on CD.'
