Author:
This is an agreeably undemanding work for the listener, but far from undemanding for the violinist when such very fast tempos are adopted in the Scherzo and finale. He emerges from his self-imposed problems with credit, though he does sound near breaking point at times in the finale. The Adagio cantabile is also faster than usual (some nice clarinet playing here) but this somehow stresses the Schubertian affinities in this attractive movement; Schubert of course was influenced by it when he wrote his Octet. The record sleeve fails to tell the customers what the seven instruments are or who plays them; I would especially like to have been given the violinist's name because he leads the group with such distinction. Quality and balance are good.'
