As far as psalms are concerned, few days in the month can be better endowed than the 27th. Morning and evening, they have the pick of them: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, I was glad, Except the Lord build the house, Out of the deep and that exemplary one about not exercising myself 'in matters which are too high for me'. The evening of the 23rd does well also, with When Israel came out of Egypt and Not unto us, O Lord. There is also in this volume the shortest (117, O praise the Lord, all ye heathen), while the longest (119, which, numerically, comes in the middle of this sequence and occupies the evening of the 24th and the next two days) is presumably reserved for Vol 11.
In these performances, the psalms for a particular service are grouped together so as to achieve a sense of continuity, the chants following in a suitable key sequence. Without wishing to trespass on theological ground, I find it a pity that they don't risk a little more triumphalism and so give a greater sense of occasion. The morning of the 27th, for example, ends with Psalm 125 (They that put their trust in the Lord), which is surely a statement of confidence, uttered in a spirit of praise. Here the utterance is subdued, the spirit cautious. It ends with 'Peace shall be upon Israel', but that is in happy contrast to the fate of backsliders and evildoers; certainly not a reason for the slow and sanctimonious 'Gloria' which follows. Too much is slow, to my mind, and I cannot think that even the acoustics of St Paul's make this necessary; at least not on records.
The choir is, of course, magnificent, perhaps supreme, in the quality of its voices. The trebles now sing with a bright clean-edged tone, and produce an excellent soloist for Walford Davies's chant I will lift up mine eyes (and, incidentally, I see that Sir David Willcocks is credited with the chant commonly known as 'Tonus Peregrinus', which I take to be rather older than any of us). As ever, the organ accompaniments are imaginative (Psalm 130 a fine example) without drawing undue attention.
