Henry Cowell’s Quartet Romantic is as much a concept as a musical statement, and makes for disorientating listening. The Riegger Quintet has great rhythmic buoyancy, while Crawford Seeger’s musings never become too abstruse. Becker’s The Abongo, a menacing percussion workout, unexpectedly but effectively closes this compilation of early American modernism.'
