For this CD version of analogue originals of the late seventies, DG have shrewdly taken the opportunity to recouple the items to bring these two favourite concertante pieces together. As the comparisons show, it is a favourite coupling but an ungenerous one at about 40 minutes of music, and it would have been quite possible to include as well the Rodrigo Concierto madrigal for two guitars, the original coupling for the Concierto de Aranjuez. As it is, Yepes gives idiomatic performances of both works, darkly poetic in the famous slow movement of the Concierto de Aranjuez, but lacking in sparkle in the Allegros. Only a slight edge on high violins betrays the age of the recording, but the sound is far less spacious than on the superb Decca Montreal disc with its more inspired, more colourful performances.'
