Return home from the busy world, play two consecutive bands of this, leave it, come back to it later for a couple more, and it will no doubt prove a boon and a blessing, ''sleep after toil, port after stormy seas'' and so forth. Play it as I did, continuously, as though it constituted a recital programme, and it may be found less satisfying. Perhaps some spiritual principles have guided the ordering of the items; certainly the musical sense eludes me. Mozart follows Gounod, then Bach precedes more Gounod; over the other side, some Cesar Franck, which would have gone nicely with the Gounod, interposes between Mendelssohn and another piece of Mozart. A further limitation of the recital's success as a recital concerns the soloist. Until her final contribution, Let the bright Seraphim, she has no opportunity for brightness, energy, attack; at least, she takes none. The singing is not inexpressive: O divine Redeemer is sung as a prayer and a private one, and there have been many blander performances of Schubert's Ave Maria. All the same, the phrase ''Hear my cry'' in the Gounod song is not really made to sound like a cry—is is not sung out enough for that—and the ''bright Seraphim'' solo doesn't shine out with a ring to match the trumpet. Best, and then utterly beautiful, are moments of repose such as the entry on the long F natural in Laudate Dominum or the phrase ''Geh'ich mit Freuden'' in Bist du bei mir. The choir sing well, though somewhat muffled by the echo; the arrangements are acceptable, though the provision of a Heavenly Chorus in Auf Flugeln des Gesanges looks like another attempt to paint (sic) the lily.'
