After the appearance of Bryan Crimp's valuable refurbishments of Simon Barere's dazzling HMV recordings of 1934–6 (# APR7001, 12/85), an enthusiastic reader enquired (February 1986, page 1005) about further performances by this pianistic genius—Rachmaninov's description, not just mine—and mentioning that he had heard of the existence of recordings by him of Liszt and Rachmaninov concertos. Well, here they are, along with various other works, from acetates privately made during five Carnegie Hall concerts between 1944 and 1949, now released in transfers by Bryan Crimp (with exemplary presentation by him) be permission of the pianist's son. Despite inevitable imperfections from those 78rpm discs—distortions and ineradicable surface noise and swish—the effect is still overwhelming; this is a player blessed not only with sensational virtuosity and tonal finesse (which has been universally recognized) but with exceptional poetic sensibility. His Liszt Sonata, for example, has both infinite sweetness and an unparallelled daemonic fire which admittedly owes something to the breathtaking speed at which formidable difficulties are challenged: only very occasionally is there a splashy moment, but the exdtement generated is electrifying. (One could cheerfully throttle the persistent coughers in the New York audience that November.) This unrestrained partiality to speed is the only thing against his Liszt concerto, which was apparently performed without a rehearsal. (Would the conductor have been the ex-Hollywood David Brockman who wrote the score for All quiet on the Western front?) The balance between piano and orchestra is decidedly haphazard (and the solo triangle is completely inaudible), but the second subject is presented with seductive limpidity and tenderness, and some of the rapid florid passages approach the unbelievable.
The Rachmaninov concerto (the earliest recording here, thought to be from 1944) is given a hot-blooded but deeply sympathetic reading. Balance, again, is far from good, but what emerges is the sense of a real and vibrant performance, not a studio synthesis. Barere rushes the G minor Prelude unmercifully, but that in G sharp minor is finely shaped and controlled. His combination of bravura and delicacy is well exemplified in Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12, poetry in a 'renaissance' of Corelli by Godowsky (a close friend) and light-fingered sparkle in one of Loeillet (miscalled Lully in the earlier HMV set). There is a riveting performance powerful and structurally unified, of ''Funerailles'', and two readings (separated by over two years) of ''Gnomenreigen'' which contain marvels of featherweight fleetness, as does the stunningly virtuosic Etude for the left hand by Barere's teacher Blumenfeld (who also taught Horowitz) scarcely credible that this is truly played by only one hand. He achieves a degree of finger dexterity in the Weber perpetuum mobile and Liszt's Rapsodie espagnole which one would think possible only by some hanky-panky in the mechanical process were it not that this is patently being played live, and when it comes to the Schumann Toccata and Balakirev's Islamey two of his favourite party-pieces—the virtuosity is so spectacular that one is tempted to emulate that historic gentleman in the Glasgow gallery and cry ''Whaur's yeer Vladimir Horowitz the noo?''.'
