Only dedicated film buffs know the 1939 Bob Hope comedy Some like it Hot (no connection with the Billy Wilder film 20 years later). A backstage story that also featured Gene Krupa and Una Merkel, it has left us with one of Burton Lane's most charming songs, ''The lady's in love with you'', lyrics by Frank Loesser. Michael Feinstein sings it with his accustomed delicate charm, words balanced skilfully within a smooth vocal line. With the composer at the piano, this second volume of Lane numbers makes the strongest case for his work to be better known.
The chosen songs are divided between rarities from movies and standards such as ''Everything I have is yours'' from Dancing Lady, which Feinstein and Lane perform in tandem with ''Your head on my shoulders'' from Kid Millions. Lane spent a decade in Hollywood before returning to Broadway, where his career had begun in 1930 with songs forThree's a Crowd. E. Y. Harburg supplied the lyrics for Hold on to your hats in 1940 from which we hear two songs as well as a couple of other Harburg-penned items (''Poor you'' and ''Where have I seen your face before?'').
Alan Jay Lerner was Lane's most successful collaborator with On a clear day you can see forever and the disc ends with a ten-song sequence from this famous show. Lerner wrote that his contribution to the 1952 Fred Astaire film Royal Wedding made him ''cringe'' though Lane's songs were ''spiffy''. ''The happiest day of my life'' has a gentle, pleasant tune and Lane plays a solo piano reprise of it; the disc opens with another Lerner lyric, ''It's time for a love song'' from Carmelina, their 1979 Broadway show based onBuona Sera, Mrs Campbell. Lerner and Lane believed very strongly in this musical, which starred Georgia Brown; perhaps it is time for a revival—meanwhile this disc is highly recommended as an unhackneyed survey of Lane's output.'
