Inexplicably The Four Seasons is at the top of the list of most often recorded pieces of classical music—and this universal popularity again shows in the CD listings. Of these latest three CD versions to reach me, the 1970 performance by Alan Loveday with the ASMF under Sir Neville Marriner makes the most delectable choice. Everything goes superbly well and generates a special excitement which the warm yet detailed recording (for all its age) conveys admirably. Tonal balance is about ideal and even such touches as a change between harpsichord and organ in the continuo can be savoured.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra version is directed by the soloist, Jaime Laredo, with a high degree of both musical control and balance judgement. Technically the CD tone is less sumptious than the ASMF recording and that plus the rather close strings—soloist and other 'front desks'—might cause some listeners to reach for the treble tone control. Yet the fact that this is one of Pickwick's first batch of £ 6.99 budget CDs is much in its favour, and many people will find this musically satisfying performance a real bargain at the price.
With the Karajan remastered 1973 recording we enter a grander league in terms of orchestral size and marvellous precision and integration. The soloist Michel Schwalbe produces a rich tone throughout and the engineers have achieved a most believable balance in a large-sounding acoustic without spotlighting. As a bonus, this is the only disc offering fill-up music—bringing the programme timing up to a generous 70 minutes, compared with just 43 and 38 minutes respectively for the ASMF and SCO versions. This re-programming, which many of us think the record companies should do more often to provide better CD playing-time value, restores most enjoyable 1971 performances to the catalogue of Albinoni's justifiably popular Adagio and Corelli's ''Christmas Concerto''. Here the sound quality takes on a degree of roughness, with the original tape hiss in evidence—so that, for my money, the choice must remain the totally absorbing Four Seasons from the ASMF.'
