Rattle: the exhibition

This portrait of Rattle dates from 1982 and was taken by Rory Coonan with a 150-year-old plate camera. It was first published in 2015 and is part of the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection.
This map shows just how closely entwined Rattle’s childhood was with that of the Beatles in Liverpool in the 1960s. He grew up just one mile away from the childhood homes of John Lennon and Brian Epstein.
The nine-year-old Rattle can be seen here sitting in the front row of the audience (bottom right) for a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No 8 by the RLPO, conducted by Charles Groves in Liverpool Cathedral

The LSO transformed its visual identity this year to mark the arrival of Sir Simon Rattle as Music Director. His movements on the podium were recorded in a special motion capture studio and were then transformed into digital art.

Sir Simon Rattle's return to London as Music Director of the LSO is being celebrated at the Barbican Centre with a special exhibition of photographs spanning the conductor's life. 'Rattle: the exhibition' is open now and will run until December 22, 2017.
