Today’s Video of the Day is a performance of the 2nd movement from Bartók's Solo Violin Sonata by Nancy Zhou. The recording can be found on Zhou’s upcoming album with Orchid Classics Stories (re)Traced which is released 6 June. The video was filmed at the Caroline Hume Hall of the San Francisco Conservatory.
In Nancy's words: ‘This electrifying fugue is a grungy and pointillistic nod to J. S. Bach, bringing to life four voices that interact with each other in a kaleidoscope of motions and blistering sound effects. In just under four minutes, the composer confronts the performer with a challenge of tiptoeing between abrasive angularity and nimble grooving - so as to highlight various shades of colour imparted on this relentless tug-of-war and even battle of wits between these voices. Fearless compositional ambition abound!’
